About Medina County
Medina County is immediately west of Bexar County in southwest Texas. Hondo is the county seat. The Medina River, from which the county derives its name, traverses the northeastern portion of the county. The western part is drained by the Frio River.
The county is divided from east to west by the Balcones Escarpment, which separates the Edwards Plateau and Hill Country to the north from the Rio Grande Plains to the south. Most subsurface or ground waters in Medina County are artesian; two major subsurface water belts are the Edwards Aquifer and the Carrizo Sand Aquifer.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,335 square miles (3,456 km²), of which, 1,328 square miles (3,439 km²) of it is land and 7 square miles (17 km²) of it (0.51%) is water and elevations ranging from 1,995 feet in the northern Hill Country to as low as 635 feet in the southern region.
