About Atascosa County
Atascosa County is south of San Antonio on Interstate Highway 37 in the Rio Grande Plain region of south central Texas. Jourdanton, the county seat, is located on state highways 16 and 97 in central Atascosa County thirty-three miles south of San Antonio and 100 miles northwest of Corpus Christi. Atascosa County was formed in 1856 from Bexar County. Atascosa is named for the Atascosa River. The county is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The mining of lignite coal, first begun in 1888, also became a major industry as the price of fuel oil and natural gas rose. The first lignite in Atascosa County was burned as fuel in 1981 after a ten-year period of research and development by the Brazos Electric Power Cooperative of Waco and the South Texas Electric Cooperative of Victoria.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,236 square miles (3,200 km²), of which, 1,232 square miles (3,191 km²) of it is land and 3 square miles (9 km²) of it (0.28%) is water.
